The Morgan County 4-H swine program held its annual Swine Showmanship workshop at the Morgan County Fairgrounds July 5. More than 65 members participated in the showmanship workshop.

Three former ten-year members returned to discuss and give their help to the young 4-Hers: Devon Fisher, Ryan Sichting and Randy Sichting. During the workshop an activity of washing your pig was demonstrated by Randy Sichting. Then the pigs were moved over to the show arena with several older members, Joy Sheldon (10-year member), Ben Sheldon (eight-year member), Samantha Messer (10-year member) Corey Hamblen (two-year member) and Rylie Feeback (five-year member) participated in showing-the pigs.

The speaker was Devon Fisher, who discussed several items to remember while you show your pig in front of the swine judge. Then the mini 4-Hers were allowed to walk the pigs with older members giving them suggestions and assisting them. These younger 4-H members should respond to the older 4-H members near their own age better than a parent or adult leader. It is important that the older 4-H members show their leadership skills to the younger 4-H members.

The meeting was topped off by allowing the 4-H members to suggest the location of their pigs in the swine barn during the fair. A lot of the exhibitors want to come to this workshop for just this reason so they can be by their friends during the fair. A lot of 4-Hers enjoy the camaraderie and togetherness during the fair making life long friends and great memories from this experience.
